Maier introduced Soul Mellow Yellow Beer in 1967 alongside a companion offering, Soul Stout Malt Liquor. The brand represented an overt effort to target African-American urban consumers during an era when major beverage manufacturers were increasingly tailoring niche products to specific demographics. However, the overt marketing approach drew immediate public backlash and community protests, leading to rapid commercial failure. Maier abandoned the brand shortly after launch, making its production run exceptionally brief.

The Maier Brewing Company had a long history in Southern California, tracing its origins back to 1875 when German immigrant Joseph Maier partnered with George Zobelein in Los Angeles. The operation navigated Prohibition by manufacturing legal near-beer and soft drinks before resuming full brewing operations after repeal. In the post-World War II period, under the ownership of financier Paul Kalmanovitz, Maier shifted heavily toward budget-friendly and contract-brewed labels, most notably its flagship Brew 102. Facing intense pressure from larger national breweries expanding into the West Coast market, Maier eventually shuttered its Los Angeles plant in the early 1970s.
