Soul Stout Malt Liquor 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Maier's Soul Stout Malt Liquor

The Soul Stout Malt Liquor 12 oz can represents one of the most historically significant releases in twentieth-century American breweriana. Introduced in the late 1960s by the Maier Brewing Company of Los Angeles, California, the beverage was launched alongside a sister brand, Soul Mellow Yellow Beer.

Maier's introduction of the line marked one of the earliest direct attempts by an American regional brewery to develop and market a product line targeted specifically at African-American consumers. However, the overt racial branding sparked community controversy, public criticism, and protests upon release. Compounded by the brewery's financial difficulties during that era, the brand suffered from an abbreviated commercial lifespan and was withdrawn from the market shortly after debut.

Due to this brief distribution window, the 12-ounce can is exceedingly scarce compared to other releases from the era. Collectors prize the label for its historical context and distinctive bold red graphic design. The brand's lasting notoriety among breweriana enthusiasts was highlighted when it was chosen to be featured on the cover of the Brewery Collectibles Club of America (BCCA) reference book for tab tops. Today, it remains an iconic artifact representing the evolving social and marketing landscape of late-1960s brewing history.
