Southern Select Premium Quality Beer Flat Top Can

Southern Select Flat Top Can

The Southern Select Premium Quality Beer Flat Top Can represents a key chapter in Texas brewing heritage, originating from Galveston-Houston Breweries, Inc. in Galveston, Texas.

Brand Heritage and Recognition

The Southern Select label boasts a storied pedigree dating back to the late 19th century when it was first introduced by the Houston Ice & Brewing Company. The brand gained international acclaim prior to Prohibition, famously winning the Grand Prix at the 1913 Ghent Exposition in Belgium against thousands of competing beers. Following the repeal of Prohibition, the brand found a permanent home under Galveston-Houston Breweries, operating out of the historic brewery facility on Postoffice Street in Galveston.

Production and Design

Manufactured using American Can Company's "Keglined" process, the flat top can prominently displays the "Premium Quality" banner across its bold label graphics. The front panel features the traditional Southern Select emblem, reflecting the mid-century aesthetic favored by Gulf Coast brewers. Variations of this can exist among collectors, featuring subtle differences in regulatory text, mandatory statements, and background finishes.

Brewery Transition

Galveston-Houston Breweries produced Southern Select as its flagship offering before the facility was acquired by the St. Louis-based Falstaff Brewing Corporation. Today, the can remains a prized artifact representing one of the Lone Star State's most prominent regional brewing operations.
