Spearman Ale Flat Top Can

Spearman Ale Flat Top from Norfolk

The Spearman Ale Flat Top Can represents a notable chapter in mid-century American brewing history, connecting a famous Gulf Coast label with East Coast contract packaging in Norfolk, Virginia.

Brand Origin and the Century Connection

The Spearman brand originated in Pensacola, Florida, where Guy Spearman founded the Spearman Brewing Company following the repeal of Prohibition. The regional brewery built a strong Southern following before eventually halting operations. Following the Florida plant's closure, the rights to the brand were acquired by Century Brewing Corporation, located at Church Street and Washington Avenue in Norfolk, Virginia. Century brewed and packaged Spearman Ale under the trade name "Spearman Brewery Company," keeping the established label alive for regional distribution.

Graphic Design and Attribution

The 12-ounce container features bold Spearman branding accompanied by traditional brewing iconography, such as barley and hop elements. The mandatory text prominently identifies Century in Norfolk, Virginia as the producer. Unlike earlier Florida releases, the Norfolk cans reflect Century’s distinct mid-century lithography and canning standards.

Collector Significance and Variations

Among breweriana collectors, Century-produced cans are valued for documenting the Norfolk plant’s prolific era of producing regional brands and alternate labels prior to the facility’s corporate rebranding to Champale.

Collectors have documented variations of the Spearman Ale flat top design, including subtle differences in metallic finishes, color tones, and mandatory text layout. As the industry moved away from flat tops toward pull-tab convenience, this design captures the final era of flat-top canning for the Spearman name.
