Spearman English Type Ale Cone Top Can

Spearman English Type Ale Overview

The Spearman English Type Ale cone top can is an iconic artifact of Florida breweriana, originating from the Spearman Brewing Company located on Barrancas Avenue in Pensacola, Florida. Founded by industrialist Guy Spearman—who was inspired to enter the brewing business following a visit to the Carta Blanca brewery in Monterrey, Mexico—the operation quickly grew into one of the most prominent independent breweries along the Gulf Coast.

Spearman's Pensacola facility supplied beverages across the region and became especially well-known for catering to service personnel stationed at the nearby Pensacola Naval Air Station during peak operational years. The company frequently promoted its lineup with the regional slogan "The Pure Water Does It".

Manufactured by the Continental Can Company, this high-profile container highlights the commercial graphic styling of mid-century southern brewing. Because Florida had relatively few packaging breweries during this era compared to northern brewing centers, regional cans from the state remain highly sought after by breweriana collectors.

Known variations exist across production runs, reflecting regulatory changes and manufacturing updates. These include versions bearing the mandatory Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statement as well as non-IRTP releases, along with subtle differences in corporate text and canning marks. Today, the can is recognized as a quintessential centerpiece for collectors specializing in Florida and southern brewing history.
