Stag Extra Dry Pilsener Beer Cone Top Can

Stag Extra Dry Pilsener Cone Top

Produced by the Griesedieck Western Brewing Company of Belleville, Illinois, the Stag Extra Dry Pilsener can represents a prominent chapter in mid-century Midwestern brewing history. Originally introduced in the early twentieth century by the Western Brewery, the Stag brand grew into a dominant regional powerhouse, eventually propelling Griesedieck Western to become one of the largest commercial brewing operations in the United States.

Design and Collector Significance

The can showcases classic Stag branding, highlighted by bold typography and the stag deer insignia that defined the label throughout the mid-twentieth century. Collectors often examine the mandatory legal markings on the can body, including the presence of the Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statement on earlier runs, which signals manufacturing prior to the repeal of federal tax-statement requirements in 1950.

Label Variations and Heritage

Known variations of the Stag Extra Dry Pilsener can exist among collectors, reflecting manufacturing transitions, varying regional distribution text, and subtle differences in metallic trim or text placement. While Griesedieck Western operated primarily out of Belleville, some cans noted secondary distribution references tied to the wider St. Louis metropolitan area. This strong regional identity helped Stag maintain a devoted following across southern Illinois and Missouri, making this cone top a prized piece of classic Illinois breweriana.
