Stag Premium Dry Pilsner Beer Flat Top Can

Belleville's Stag Flat Top Can

The Stag Premium Dry Pilsner Beer flat top can is an iconic piece of Midwestern brewing heritage, produced by the Griesedieck Western Brewery Company out of Belleville, Illinois. Griesedieck Western was a prominent regional brewing force, fiercely competing against both rising national giants and separate brewing operations run by extended members of the Griesedieck family.

Design and Iconography

The can's graphic layout centers on the brand's unmistakable trademark: a stately antlered stag head. Set against metallic accents and bold background paneling, the typography prominently emphasizes the "Premium Dry Pilsner" designation. This branding highlighted Griesedieck Western's marketing push toward dry-fermented lagers during a period when regional brewers sought sharp, modern promotional identities to command retail shelf space.

Manufacturing and Variations

Collectors track multiple variations of the Belleville Stag flat top can. These variations stem from different container manufacturers that supplied the brewery, such as the American Can Company and the Continental Can Company, each leaving distinct maker marks and manufacturer codes along the seam. Differences across production runs also include slight alterations in mandatory legal text, mandatory layout spacing, and top lids, with certain runs featuring specialty vanity lids.

Brewery Legacy

Belleville served as the home base for Stag, where the brand originally grew out of the historic Western Brewery before Henry L. Griesedieck took helm of the operation. Stag expanded to become the company's flagship label, eventually distributed across dozens of states. Griesedieck Western operated the Belleville plant until its mid-century acquisition by the Carling Brewing Company. Today, cans carrying the Griesedieck Western Belleville mandatory line remain prized historical centerpieces for collectors focused on classic Illinois and St. Louis-area brewing history.
