Standard Erin Brew Beer Flat Top Can

Cleveland's Erin Brew Flat Top

Standard Erin Brew stands as one of the defining mid-century beer cans from Northeast Ohio. Produced by the Standard Brewing Company on Train Avenue in Cleveland, the can represents a landmark chapter in the industrial and cultural history of the city.

Standard Brewing Company was established by saloonkeeper Stephen S. Creadon and banker John T. Feighan. While many contemporary regional breweries catered exclusively to German-American brewing traditions, Standard introduced Erin Brew to celebrate the founders' Irish heritage. The label imagery prominently incorporated shamrock-inspired motifs, emerald accents, and traditional crest work that resonated strongly across Cleveland's West Side neighborhoods.

In 1950, Standard completed a major postwar expansion of its Train Avenue facilities, opening a modern bottling and canning facility. Following this expansion, the brewery claimed the distinction of being the first brewing operation in the state of Ohio to introduce flat top cans to the market.

Beyond its packaging milestones, Erin Brew achieved massive regional prominence through an ambitious sports media campaign. Standard began sponsoring radio and television broadcasts of Cleveland Indians baseball games in 1946. When the Indians captured the World Series title in 1948, Erin Brew surged to become a household name across Ohio, southern Michigan, western Pennsylvania, and New York.

For breweriana collectors, the Standard Erin Brew flat top is recognized by its bold typographic banner and classic Irish heraldry. Variations exist across production runs, featuring subtle differences in canning manufacturer marks, bottom lid stamps, and mandatory text placements along the seam. Standard Brewing continued independent operations until selling out to Schaefer in 1961, leaving this flat top as a celebrated artifact of Cleveland's brewing past.
