Standard Genuine Draught Beer Gallon

Standard Genuine Draught Gallon

Brewed and filled in Rochester, New York, by the Standard Brewing Company (also known as the Standard Rochester Brewing Co.), the Standard Genuine Draught Beer gallon can represents a notable chapter in Western New York brewing history.

Marketed under the popular "Party Barrel" concept, this large-format container was produced to bring draft-style beer to social gatherings, picnics, and group events across the Upstate market. The can's lithographed artwork features simulated wooden barrel staves flanked by hoop bands, framing the bold "Standard" and "Genuine Draught" branding.

Standard was among a select group of regional American breweries that packaged beer in gallon-sized containers, offering party cans across multiple labels including Standard Beer, Standard Dry Ale, and Topper. Known variations exist across manufacturing runs, primarily differentiated by subtle changes in brewery mandatory text, union label placement, and manufacturer stamps from the National Can Company.

Because gallon party containers were manufactured in considerably smaller quantities than standard consumer cans and were routinely discarded after single-use occasions, this can remains a treasured display piece among Rochester breweriana historians and regional can collectors.
