Star Model Premium Quality Beer Flat Top Can

Star Model Premium Quality Beer

This 12-ounce flat top can represents Star Model Premium Quality Beer, produced in connection with Star Union operations in Chicago, Illinois. The face of the can features a dynamic crossed red ribbon bearing the bold "STAR MODEL" typography, positioned directly beneath the five-pointed star insignia inscribed with the "S U P C O" lettering of the Star Union Products Company. Curved across the upper white field is the arched phrase "BREWERS OF FINE BEER SINCE 1845," calling attention to the deep historical roots of the operating enterprise.

Star Model stood as the flagship offering of the brewery throughout much of the twentieth century. Marketed as an everyday premium lager, the brand built a loyal following throughout northern and central Illinois. The label was promoted through an array of tavern signs, glassware, and local advertising campaigns emphasizing smooth refreshment and traditional brewing craftsmanship. As packaging trends modernized in the post-World War II era, the brand moved into flat top cans to retain its competitive presence on grocery and package store shelves.

Star Union traces its origins to 1845, establishing itself as one of the earliest commercial brewing enterprises in the state of Illinois. Operating as the Star Union Brewing Company and later as the Star Union Products Company, the establishment navigated the challenges of Prohibition by shifting production to near beer, malt tonics, and soft drinks under variations of the Star Model moniker. Following Repeal, the company resumed full brewing operations, though mid-century consolidation in the brewing industry increased competitive pressure. This ultimately led to operational ties with Chicago-based Canadian Ace Brewing Company in the 1960s before brewing ceased altogether.

Flat top cans from historic Midwestern regional producers hold a respected place in the breweriana hobby. The Star Model can is sought after by regional Illinois specialists and mid-century can enthusiasts who appreciate its balanced ribbon graphic, crisp presentation, and ties to a historic brewing operation.
