Stegmaier Gold Medal Beer Flat Top Can

Stegmaier Gold Medal Flat Top Can

The Stegmaier Gold Medal Beer flat top can represents a classic piece of mid-century breweriana from the Stegmaier Brewing Company of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Originally established by German immigrant Charles Stegmaier, the brewery expanded over the decades to become one of the largest independent brewing companies in the eastern United States.

The "Gold Medal" namesake stems from the brewery's success at international European expositions in cities such as Rome, Paris, Brussels, and Vienna, where Stegmaier earned eight gold medals for brewing excellence. The graphic design on the can celebrates these achievements, showcasing the brand's heraldic crest, commemorative medallions, and classic typography.

Collectors recognize several variations of this flat top can across its history. Graphic presentations include metallic red background finishes as well as white-and-gold color palettes. During wartime, Stegmaier also produced olive drab flat top cans under government contracts for military distribution. Cans distributed across Pennsylvania often featured the official state tax stamp or keystone markings stamped on the lid.

Following decades of widespread distribution along the East Coast, Stegmaier ceased independent brewing operations in Wilkes-Barre in 1974, with the brand subsequently acquired by neighboring Lion Brewery. Today, this flat top can remains an essential collector's item representing the rich brewing heritage of northeastern Pennsylvania.
