Sterling Ale Flat Top Can

Sterling Ale Flat Top Can Profile

Produced by Sterling Brewers, Inc. in Evansville, Indiana, the Sterling Ale Flat Top Can represents a prominent regional release from one of the Ohio River Valley's major mid-century brewing centers. While Sterling distributed its flagship lager extensively across the Midwest and the South, the companion ale was produced in far lower volumes, making surviving examples of the ale can considerably more elusive for collectors than the standard pilsner version.

Can Design and Manufacturing

The container was produced in a 12-ounce steel format, primarily fabricated by the American Can Company under the well-known "Keglined" trademark. The can's livery features bold Sterling trade dress adapted specifically for their ale product, sporting the classic mid-century logo and distinct color separation to differentiate it on retail shelves. Like many cans from the Evansville packaging facility, certain issues also included branded vanity tops bearing the company trademark.

Variations and Industry Trends

Sterling was among a select group of American breweries that continued to utilize opening instruction side panels well past the era when most competitors had abandoned them. The Sterling Ale can carries on this tradition, featuring side-panel instructional diagrams alongside mandatory brewery identification. Variations of the can exist from different production batches, reflecting minor changes in mandatory statutory text, state tax stamps, and slight differences in side-panel typography and canning company identifiers.

Regional Heritage

Evansville maintained a rich brewing heritage, and Sterling stood as one of the city's defining industrial names alongside rivals like F.W. Cook. Offering a canned ale allowed the company to broaden its portfolio in southern and midwestern markets. Today, the Sterling Ale flat top remains a classic representation of Indiana canning history and mid-century graphic packaging.
