Sterling Pilsner Beer Flat Top Can

Sterling Pilsner Flat Top Can

Produced by Sterling Brewers, Inc. in Evansville, Indiana, the Sterling Pilsner Beer flat top represents a hallmark piece of mid-century Midwestern brewing history. Evansville was an active industrial brewing hub along the Ohio River, where Sterling competed with regional peers like F.W. Cook to distribute packaged beer across the Midwest and South.

Design and Slogans

The can's lithography is well-regarded among collectors for its clean composition, metallic accents, and traditional Sterling crest. Many runs incorporate snowflake motif elements in the background, alongside recognizable promotional catchphrases such as "Have Yourself a Sterling Time" and "Aged That Extra Month."

Manufacturing and Variations

Sterling utilized major can manufacturers for its packaging lines, with cans produced by both the American Can Company (featuring the "Keglined" oval logo) and the Continental Can Company. Known variations exist across production runs, showing differences in mandatory legal text, slogan placement, side-panel layout, and volume markings. Certain batches were also finished with factory-stamped vanity lids bearing the brewery's distinctive insignia.

Additionally, Sterling was notable for continuing to print instructional diagrams on the side panels of their cans longer than many competing breweries. The Sterling Pilsner flat top remains an enduring favorite for collectors focusing on Indiana brewing heritage and classic regional can design.
