Sterling Premium Pilsner Draft 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Evansville Sterling Draft Can

The Sterling Premium Pilsner Draft 12 oz tab top can stands as a notable piece of midwestern brewing history, produced by Sterling Brewers, Inc. in Evansville, Indiana. Based along Fulton Avenue near the Ohio River, Sterling was one of the dominant brewing institutions in the Tri-State area spanning Indiana, Kentucky, and Illinois. When packaged draft beer gained widespread industry traction, Sterling expanded its lineup to offer draft-formulated pilsner directly in convenient canned formats.

Brewery Heritage and Label Design

Sterling's roots trace back to the nineteenth century, successfully re-emerging after Prohibition to become a regional powerhouse. The can design highlights the brewery's traditional heraldic branding, featuring prominent "Draft" and "Premium Pilsner" banners over metallic accents and classic typography. The front and reverse display the recognizable Sterling crest, tailored to capture consumer demand for brewery-fresh draft flavor in off-premise packaging.

Collector Notes and Variations

Among breweriana collectors, this 12-ounce issue is recognized for several production variations that reflect changes at the Evansville plant, including the era when the brewery came under the umbrella of Associated Brewing Company. Variations documented among surviving cans include:

• Mandatory Text Adjustments: Subtle differences exist in side-panel legal phrasing, with some cans crediting Sterling Brewers Inc. and others reflecting Associated corporate nomenclature.
• Text Placement: Minor printing differences occur in the placement of the fluid volume statement, such as bottom-rim positioning versus side-panel layout.
• Can Maker Marks: Containers were produced with stamps from major packaging manufacturers, including Continental Can Company and American Can Company.

As an iconic regional draft issue from southern Indiana, this can represents a key phase in Sterling's extensive packaging history.
