Stoney's Pilsener Beer Flat Top Can

Stoney's Pilsener Flat Top Can

The Stoney's Pilsener Beer flat top can represents a classic artifact of Pennsylvania brewing heritage, originating from the Jones Brewing Company located along the Youghiogheny River in Smithton, Pennsylvania. Established by William Benjamin "Stoney" Jones—who, local lore suggests, acquired the predecessor Eureka Brewery in a high-stakes poker game before moving operations to Smithton—the brewery built a dedicated regional following across western Pennsylvania and the broader Mid-Atlantic area.

Following the repeal of Prohibition, Jones Brewing Company expanded its packaging lineup under the family name. While the brewery famously marketed its flagship Stoney's Pilsener in cone top cans and later transitioned into pull-tab iterations, the flat top release of Stoney's Pilsener is particularly prized by breweriana enthusiasts. Because Jones was an independent regional brewer with focused distribution primarily serving local mining and industrial communities, flat top issues from the Smithton facility were produced in substantially smaller numbers than cans from national brewing conglomerates, making them notably harder to find than their cone top counterparts.

The design features the brand's traditional mid-century aesthetic, highlighted by the prominent "Stoney's" script across the label face alongside classic striping and heraldic motifs. The mandatory text designates the Jones Brewing Company of Smithton, PA.

Collectors have identified variations in production across different manufacturing runs, including variations in side-panel lettering color and distinct maker marks from can manufacturers like the Continental Can Company. As a central highlight of Keystone State breweriana, the Stoney's Pilsener flat top remains an enduring symbol of small-town American industrial brewing.
