Superior Premium Beer Flat Top Can

Chicago's Superior Premium Flat Top

The Superior Premium Beer flat top can is a mid-century Illinois collectible associated with Superior Brewing Co. in Chicago, Illinois. During this era of American brewing consolidation, Superior was utilized as an alternate trade name by Chicago's prolific Canadian Ace Brewing Company, operating out of the historic South Emerald Avenue plant. Canadian Ace regularly marketed beers under various corporate aliases—such as Superior, Essex, and Star Union—to service regional markets and private-label contracts across the Midwest.

Design and Production

The can showcases mid-century commercial lithography designed for bold shelf visibility. Produced as a standard steel 12-ounce container, manufacturing was handled by packaging suppliers such as the Continental Can Company. The side panels display mandatory packaging text crediting the Superior Brewing Co. entity in Chicago.

Collector Significance and Variations

Among breweriana enthusiasts, cans from the Superior label offer insight into Chicago’s competitive post-war brewing scene. Known variations exist across different manufacturing press runs, showing subtle differences in container manufacturer stamps, seam construction, and the layout of side-panel mandatory text. Because secondary and contract labels often had shorter distribution runs than major national brands, cans from this Chicago label remain a popular focus for regional flat top collectors.
