Supreme Premium Beer Flat Top Can

Supreme Premium Beer of Chicago

The Supreme Premium Beer flat top represents a notable piece of urban brewing history from Chicago, Illinois. Marketed under the Supreme Brewing name, the label was produced during a fiercely competitive era when regional brewers throughout the Midwest vied for tavern taps and grocery shelf visibility.

Design and Lithography

The can showcases classic mid-century graphic design, highlighted by bold typography, high-contrast coloring, and traditional heraldic elements arranged across a three-panel layout. Its sharp metallic accents and clean aesthetic illustrate the commercial lithography techniques utilized by major container manufacturers supplying urban breweries.

Production and Variations

Collectors studying Chicago breweriana pay close attention to manufacturing details on this label. Variations exist across different production runs, primarily distinguished by differences in mandatory side-panel statements—such as the inclusion or omission of specific 'Brewed and Packed' phrasing—as well as subtle shifts in text alignment, seam construction, and canning line marks. These differences reflect the shifting packaging contracts and supplier relationships common among regional brewers of the period.

Collector Significance

Chicago was one of the nation's premier brewing centers, home to dozens of neighborhood operations alongside larger industrial producers. Today, Supreme Premium is a sought-after label among collectors specializing in Illinois brewing history and classic flat top packaging, representing the diverse commercial landscape of midwestern beer distribution.
