This 12-ounce flat top can represents an early 1940s release of Tacoma Pale Beer produced by the Rainier Brewing Company at its facility in San Francisco, California. Manufactured during the Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) era, the can features classic steel flat-top construction developed with Keglined technology from the American Can Company. The front face is anchored by a circular landscape medallion depicting a snow-capped mountain framed by evergreens, positioned directly above the stylized brand script and the classic quotation-marked slogan, "Best East or West".

Originally connected to Pacific Northwest brewing traditions, the Tacoma brand was acquired and integrated into Rainier’s portfolio during the late 1920s. Following the repeal of Prohibition, the company initially distributed the brew under the Tacoma Brewing Company moniker before placing it directly under the Rainier Brewing Company corporate banner in the mid-1930s. Positioned as a crisp, traditional pale lager, Tacoma Pale Beer was widely distributed throughout West Coast markets until Rainier consolidated its product lineup during the mid-20th century.

The San Francisco plant responsible for this can originated out of necessity when Washington State enacted early prohibition laws in 1916. Seeking an active market, brewery leadership established a large brewing facility at 1550 Bryant Street in San Francisco. The California outpost survived the dry years by manufacturing near beer and soft drinks, emerging after Repeal as one of the Bay Area's largest commercial brewing operations. Rainier remained a major force in regional California brewing until consolidation led to the sale of the plant in the 1950s.
