Tex Premium Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

History of Tex Premium Beer Cans

Tex Premium Beer was produced by the historic Jackson Brewing Company of New Orleans, Louisiana. Located along Decatur Street in the French Quarter, Jackson Brewing Company operated from 1890 until 1974 and grew into one of the largest brewing operations in the American South. While best known for its flagship Jax Beer brand, the brewery expanded its portfolio with regionally targeted labels, with Tex developed to compete in the regional Gulf Coast and Texas markets.

Design and Branding

The Tex Premium Beer label features western-influenced graphic styling, prominently displaying bold "TEX" lettering set against a palette of blue, white, and gold accents. Cans often featured star imagery reflecting the Lone Star motif of the broader region. Jackson Brewing marketed the beverage under descriptors including "Super Light Lager" and "Premium Beer", aiming to capture market share during an era of intense competition between regional independent breweries and expanding national competitors.

Production and Variations

During its production run at the New Orleans plant, Jackson Brewing contracted with major container manufacturers such as the American Can Company and Continental Can Company. In the collector community, known variations exist across different manufacturing runs. These differences include subtle changes in mandatory brewery text placement, variations in paint hue across the star graphic, and different manufacturer patent stamps along the seam.

Brewery Legacy

Facing market pressures and consolidation in the brewing industry, Jackson Brewing Company ceased operations at its French Quarter plant in 1974. The landmark brewery building was subsequently preserved and converted into a prominent French Quarter retail and cultural landmark. Today, cans bearing the Tex Premium Beer label represent a distinctive chapter of Jackson Brewing Company's regional packaging history.
