Tivoli Bock Flat Top Can

Tivoli Bock Flat Top Can from Denver

The Tivoli Bock flat top can represents a classic 1950s regional packaging design produced for the Tivoli Brewing Company of Denver, Colorado. Containing 12 ounces, the can is highlighted by a metallic gold background centered around a bold red diamond emblem with the cursive Tivoli script. Anchoring the graphic composition is a detailed illustration of a horned goat head—the traditional mascot of German-style bock lagers—set right above the stylized, gothic lettering for "Bock Beer." Printed across the upper shoulder is the regional slogan, "Brewed in the Heart of the Rockies."

Tivoli brewed and packaged its bock primarily as a seasonal springtime offering. Marketed to consumers across the Mountain West, the dark lager celebrated traditional Old World recipes while leaning heavily into Colorado pride and heritage. Advertising campaigns frequently heralded the seasonal return of the goat emblem to local taverns and store shelves, positioning the bock as a richer, hearty alternative to the brewery's standard pilseners and lagers.

The brewery itself held deep roots in Colorado brewing history. Originating during the Colorado Gold Rush under pioneer Moritz Sigi, the operation in West Denver's Auraria neighborhood eventually passed to John Good, who renamed it after the famed Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. The Tivoli-Union operations survived Prohibition by manufacturing near beer, ice, and soda, quickly reestablishing a strong regional footprint once brewing resumed in 1933. The brewery remained a Denver landmark for decades, but severe damage from a 1965 flood, labor unrest, and mounting pressure from national shipping breweries culminated in the facility's closure in 1969.

For breweriana enthusiasts, mid-century flat tops from western regional breweries represent a rich chapter in post-war canning history. The combination of the iconic goat mascot, striking gold finish, and historic Denver brewing pedigree makes this Tivoli can an attractive and desirable centerpiece for bock and regional collection displays.
