Trommer's Beer Flat Top Can

Trommer's Beer by Piel Bros.

The Trommer's Beer flat top can represents a notable transition period in New York brewing history. Originally established in Brooklyn during the late nineteenth century by German immigrant John F. Trommer, the John F. Trommer Evergreen Brewery grew into one of the city's prominent regional beer producers. Following decades of independent operation, the brand and Brooklyn production operations were acquired by neighboring brewer Piel Bros. in the early 1950s.

Under Piel Bros. ownership, canning continued to serve the brand's established regional market. The lithographed design maintained key elements of Trommer's classic visual identity, prominently showcasing replicas of European exposition medals won in Antwerp and Paris in the early 1910s alongside the bold Trommer brand script. The mandatory brewery text was updated to identify Piel Bros. of Brooklyn, New York, reflecting the mid-century wave of regional brewery consolidations.

The cans were produced by major packaging manufacturers of the period, including the American Can Company and Continental Can Company. Known variations exist across different manufacturing runs, showcasing subtle differences in mandatory company phrasing, can manufacturer hallmarks, and label layout details. Because Piel Bros. eventually retired the Trommer brand, this can remains a distinguished piece of mid-century Brooklyn brewing memorabilia.
