Tudor Bock Flat Top Can

Tudor Bock Flat Top Beer Can

The Tudor Bock Flat Top Can is a mid-century steel beverage container dating to the late 1950s. Produced during the golden era of flat tops, the face of the can is distinguished by an elaborate heraldic shield crowned by a knight’s helmet with a lion-shaped crest, prominently framing a traditional goat head emblem beneath the bold "TUDOR" lettering.

The Tudor brand functioned as a key private-label offering, brewed and packaged under contract primarily for major supermarket chains such as the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A&P). Positioned as an economical, quality choice for grocery shoppers, the Tudor label enabled regional retailers to offer proprietary canned beer without investing in their own brewing equipment. Tudor Bock served as the brand's seasonal spring release, making the richer, darker German-style lager accessible at a budget-friendly price point for everyday consumers.

This can was produced by the Metropolis Brewery of N.J., Inc., situated in Trenton, New Jersey. The Trenton facility possessed deep local roots, having originally served as the home of the Peoples Brewing Company before being reorganized as Metropolis in 1950. During the post-World War II period, Metropolis established a strong market presence through extensive contract packaging for regional distributors and supermarkets alongside its own proprietary lines, including the widely recognized Champale. Facing intense consolidation and competition from national macro-breweries, Metropolis sustained active regional production until the brewery closed its Trenton operations in the late 1960s.

Among breweriana collectors, mid-century flat tops associated with regional contract packaging and supermarket house brands hold a dedicated following. Seasonal bock cans are particularly sought after by enthusiasts, and this label's combination of medieval heraldic armor and classic bock goat iconography makes it a compelling display piece representing the changing retail dynamics of the era.
