Tudor Cream Ale 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Tudor Cream Ale: Cumberland History

Produced as a proprietary house brand for the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A&P), Tudor Cream Ale represents a prominent chapter in mid-century American retail and regional contract brewing. To stock its grocery shelves across the nation with cost-effective store brands, A&P partnered with select regional packaging plants, including the Cumberland Brewing Company located on North Centre Street in Cumberland, Maryland.

Supermarket Contract Brewing

During the middle of the twentieth century, regional breweries faced mounting pressure from rapidly consolidating national brands. Contract packaging for large supermarket chains allowed facilities like Cumberland—which also operated as a division of the Queen City Brewing Company—to maintain steady production volume. Under this arrangement, Cumberland produced Tudor Beer and Tudor Cream Ale to supply A&P markets throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

Graphic Design and Variations

The Tudor brand utilized distinctive heraldic imagery, typically featuring medieval shield motifs, knight's head illustrations, and bold, clean typography. Because the brand was packaged across several independent facilities nationwide, collector interest often centers on the mandatory brewery text identifying Cumberland, Maryland as the point of origin. Different variations exist across production runs, showcasing subtle revisions in mandatory text placement, graphic layouts, and lid styles. The Cumberland-brewed Tudor Cream Ale tab top remains a notable artifact of grocery store private-label distribution.
