Tudor Cream Ale 12 Oz Zip/Tab Top Can

Cumberland Tudor Cream Ale Can

Tudor Cream Ale was distributed as a dedicated private-label house brand for The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A&P), which stood among America's largest supermarket chains. To supply regional grocery stores efficiently without operating its own packaging facilities, A&P entered into contract agreements with established independent brewers across the country. In the Mid-Atlantic region, canning runs were handled by the Cumberland Brewing Company on North Centre Street in Cumberland, Maryland.

During the postwar era of national brewery consolidation, supermarket contract packaging provided crucial volume that helped regional operations like Cumberland maintain steady production alongside their proprietary lines. The Tudor line offered an economical store-brand option on A&P shelves while featuring an elaborate medieval aesthetic.

The can design is centered around Tudor's signature heraldic motif, showcasing an armored knight's helmet resting above a decorative shield crest, complemented by bold typography for the brand name and the Cream Ale designation. Mandatory panel text identifies the Cumberland Brewing Company of Cumberland, Maryland as the point of origin, distinguishing this version from Tudor cans packaged by other contract brewers across the United States.

Among collectors of supermarket private labels and regional breweriana, this can stands as a prominent piece of Mid-Atlantic commercial history. Known variations across production runs showcase differences in paint finishes—including enamel and metallic backgrounds—as well as slight modifications to mandatory text formatting and manufacturer markings.
