Tudor Pilsner Beer 12 Oz Zip/Tab/Insert Top Can

Tudor Pilsner from Norfolk, VA

The Tudor Pilsner Beer 12 oz can represents an iconic entry in mid-century American supermarket breweriana. Tudor served as the proprietary house brand for the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A&P), which contracted various regional breweries across the country to package beer under its private label banner. In Norfolk, Virginia, these cans were packaged under the Tudor Brewing Company name, an operating identity associated with Century Brewing Corporation at the historic brewhouse facility located on Washington Avenue.

The Norfolk canning facility held a rich industrial history, having formerly housed Consumers Brewing Company, Southern Brewing Company, and Jacob Ruppert before pivoting heavily toward house brand and regional contract production. The Tudor label is widely recognized among collectors for its prominent medieval-inspired heraldic motif and distinct typography, designed to provide high-visibility shelf appeal in A&P grocery aisles.

Among breweriana enthusiasts, examples carrying the Norfolk, Virginia mandatory statement are notable regional artifacts. Variations exist across different production runs, exhibiting slight differences in seam structure, metallic ink tone, and mandatory text placement. The can remains an important historical artifact linking mid-century supermarket private labeling with Norfolk's commercial brewing heritage.
