Tudor Pilsner Beer Flat Top Can

Tudor Pilsner Beer Flat Top

The Tudor Pilsner Beer flat top can, bearing the Chicago, Illinois mandatory, is an emblematic example of mid-century private-label supermarket breweriana. Tudor served as a proprietary house brand marketed through the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A&P) grocery store chain. To supply regional stores, A&P contracted independent regional breweries to package beer under trade names such as "Tudor Brewing Co." or "Tudor Brewery Ltd.", with Chicago facilities like Canadian Ace Brewing Company and Best Brewing Corporation handling production for the regional Midwestern distribution.

Design and Aesthetics

The can features the signature Tudor brand visual identity, distinguished by a medieval heraldic theme centered around a stylized knight's helmet and heraldic shield crest. This emblem is framed by bold serif typography and crisp accent borders that were standardized across packaging produced for A&P retail shelves.

Collector Notes and Variations

Within breweriana collecting, examples displaying the Chicago city mandatory are documented with variations stemming from different manufacturing runs. These include cans produced by different can makers, such as the Continental Can Company and National Can Company, as well as differences in metallic versus enamel paint finishes, side panel brewery text formatting, and lid stamping placements. The Chicago-designated can remains a prominent subject for collectors chronicling historic Chicago brewing facilities and national grocery retail partnerships.
