Tudor Premium Quality Cream Ale Flat Top Can

Century Brewing Tudor Cream Ale

The Tudor Premium Quality Cream Ale flat top can produced by Century in Norfolk, Virginia, represents a notable chapter in mid-century contract brewing and supermarket private labels. Tudor served as the signature store brand for the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A&P), one of the largest grocery retailers of the era. To distribute the brand efficiently across regional markets, A&P partnered with several regional breweries, including Century's operation in Norfolk.

Brewery Heritage

The Norfolk brewing facility held a long manufacturing lineage prior to Century taking over operations. After previously operating under Southern Brewing and Jacob Ruppert-Virginia, Century Brewing acquired the plant in the 1950s. Century specialized in economy brands and grocery chain contracts. In addition to canning under the Century name, the brewery frequently used the trade alias "Tudor Brewing Company" on their production runs.

Graphic Design and Visual Identity

The Tudor Cream Ale can design is recognized for its heraldic motif, centered on an armored knight's helmet set above a decorative crest. Complemented by distinct cream ale typography and the "Premium Quality" banner, the visual presentation was styled to compete visually with established national labels in retail displays.

Collector Significance

For breweriana collectors, the Norfolk Century iteration of Tudor Cream Ale remains an appealing example of mid-century supermarket branding and regional Virginia brewing history. Known variations exist across different manufacturing runs and mandatory label texts used by the Norfolk facility, offering depth for regional and private-label can collections.
