Tudor Premium Quality Cream Ale Pint Can

Century's Tudor Cream Ale Pint Can

The Tudor Premium Quality Cream Ale pint can represents a notable chapter in Mid-Atlantic private-label packaging. Produced by Century Brewing in Norfolk, Virginia, Tudor was distributed as a house brand through the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A&P) supermarket chain. Century Brewing operated out of the historic Washington Street brewery site in Norfolk, utilizing the facility to produce a variety of regional labels and grocery store brands.

The can design showcases Tudor's signature heraldic imagery, centered around a detailed knight's helmet motif and bold mid-century lettering. While Tudor Cream Ale was distributed in standard containers across multiple regional hubs, sixteen-ounce pint cans from the Norfolk facility are particularly sought after by collectors of larger-format breweriana and Virginia canning history. Pint containers were typically manufactured in lower volume runs compared to standard twelve-ounce cans, giving them added significance on the collector shelf.

Variations exist regarding the mandatory plant statements and corporate markings from Century's Norfolk operations, with cans reading under the parent company or designated trade names like Tudor Brewing Company. These lithography and text distinctions make the can an essential study for collectors focused on private-label lines and post-prohibition industrial brewing in Virginia.
