Tuxedo 51 Premium Zip Top Can

The Tuxedo 51 Premium Beer 12 oz zip top can from Norfolk, Virginia, represents a notable chapter in mid-century regional American brewing and packaging history. Marketed under the Tuxedo name, the label catered to regional consumer markets across the mid-Atlantic and features mandatory text citing Norfolk, VA.

Graphic Design and Labeling

The can showcases the brand's distinct presentation, anchored by bold, stylized "51" typography paired with clean, formalwear-inspired design elements. The metallic background accents and classic mid-century layout created a sharp, modern appearance on retail shelves. Known variations exist across different regional manufacturing runs, showcasing subtle differences in mandatory text placement and metallic finish applications.

Tax Stamping and Collector Interest

For breweriana collectors, authentic examples of the Norfolk-mandated Tuxedo 51 zip top can often feature the official "VA Tax Paid" lid stamping on the bottom. This marking serves as a prominent identifier for collectors authenticating cans originally distributed through Virginia trade channels.

Due to the brief production period of early aluminum tab cans before later stay-tab innovations became standard, surviving Norfolk Tuxedo 51 zip top cans have become highly sought-after artifacts of Virginia's commercial brewing past.
