Twenty Grand Select Cream Ale Flat Top Can

Terre Haute Twenty Grand Cream Ale

The Twenty Grand Select Cream Ale flat top can represents a notable chapter in the mid-century brewing history of the Terre Haute Brewing Company of Terre Haute, Indiana. Once recognized as one of the largest brewing operations in the United States, the historic Indiana plant produced the Twenty Grand label during the post-Prohibition era as regional breweries competed heavily for retail shelf space.

The brand name itself drew inspiration from thoroughbred racing traditions, echoing the fame of the champion racehorse Twenty Grand. While the Twenty Grand moniker was utilized by several Midwestern producers over the years—including the Red Top Brewing Company of Cincinnati and Chicago's Atlantic Brewing Company—cans bearing the Terre Haute Brewing Company mandatory text hold significant appeal for Indiana breweriana specialists.

Manufactured on standard steel can stock by regional container fabricators such as the Heekin Can Company, the can features mid-century typography and striking graphic elements tailored to mid-century consumers. Known variations exist among surviving specimens, showcasing minor differences in manufacturer markings, text layout, and distribution tax stamps, including cans fitted with Ohio state tax lids for interstate sales. With the original Terre Haute brewery shutting down operations in the late 1950s, this flat top serves as a lasting artifact of Indiana's industrial brewing heritage.
