Utica Club Pale Cream Ale XXX Ale Quart

Utica Club Pale Cream Ale Quart

The Utica Club Pale Cream Ale XXX Ale Quart is a notable piece of breweriana produced by the West End Brewing Company of Utica, New York. Established in 1888 by Francis Xavier Matt, the West End Brewing Company achieved nationwide distinction after Prohibition when it received the very first federal brewing permit issued in the United States.

Utica Club was West End's signature flagship brand. While standard-sized containers were common, the large-format 32-ounce quart was distributed to cater to taverns, gatherings, and family-style sharing. The label prominently features the iconic Utica Club script alongside the prominent 'XXX' designation and 'Pale Cream Ale' titling.

Produced under contract with Continental Can Company, these quart containers feature the classic quart profile of the era. Most examples bear the mandatory Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statement on the side panel alongside the West End Brewing Co. corporate credits. Collectors have identified variations across production runs, with differences found in the side-panel mandatory text formatting, layout alignments, and state-specific tax statements. Due to the lower initial production runs of quart cans compared to twelve-ounce sizes, this piece remains a centerpiece for collectors focused on upstate New York brewing history and large-format breweriana.
