Utica Club Pale Cream XXX Ale Cone Top Can

Utica Club Pale Cream Ale Cone Top

The Utica Club Pale Cream XXX Ale cone top can was produced by The West End Brewing Company of Utica, New York. Established in 1888 by F.X. Matt, West End earned a prominent place in American brewing history as the very first brewery in the United States to receive a federal license to sell beer following the repeal of Prohibition in 1933.

Design and Manufacturer Details

Manufactured in collaboration with the Continental Can Company, this container features the classic "Cap Sealed" cone top format. The can's graphics prominently display the traditional "XXX" mark, a longstanding brewing designation historically used to denote strength and quality. The design features bold crimson and dark lettering set against a lighter background, accented by the brewery’s heraldic insignia and standard regulatory text.

Collector Variations and Heritage

The Utica Club Pale Cream XXX Ale stands out as a hallmark piece of upstate New York breweriana. Surviving specimens document evolutionary manufacturing adjustments during its production run. Known variations include changes in cone profile height, minor revisions to mandatory side-panel wording, and slight alterations to manufacturer patent markings and font weights.

As West End Brewing expanded and evolved into what is now the F.X. Matt Brewing Company, the Utica Club line remained one of its most enduring labels, making this cone top a classic regional centerpiece for collectors of early American canned beer.
