Utica Club Pilsener Lager Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Utica Club Pilsener Lager Can

This 12-ounce aluminum tab top container features the classic trade dress of Utica Club Pilsener Lager Beer, produced by the West End Brewing Company of Utica, New York. Distinguished by its rounded bottom rim and the inclusion of a universal product code along the side, this issue reflects the packaging transitions of a storied regional brand. The front display is anchored by an ornate circular medallion featuring Lady Columbia draped in the American flag alongside a bald eagle and sheaf of grain, framed above the traditional brewery statement: "Brewed from best barley malt, rice, grain, choicest hops. Absolutely pure."

The Utica Club name originated during Prohibition, when the brewery kept its facility operational by producing soft drinks and non-alcoholic malt tonics under the label. When the 21st Amendment repealed the nationwide ban in December 1933, the company made American brewing history by securing the very first federal permit and becoming the first brewery to legally sell beer post-Prohibition. Utica Club quickly became a beloved Upstate New York staple and achieved national pop-culture fame beginning in the late 1950s with its television commercials featuring Schultz and Dooley, the talking character steins voiced by comedian Jonathan Winters.

Founded in 1888 by German immigrant Francis Xavier Matt, the West End Brewing Company grew to become one of New York's defining independent breweries. While thousands of regional breweries shuttered due to Prohibition, economic downturns, and national conglomerate buyouts, West End endured under continuous Matt family leadership. Later renamed the F.X. Matt Brewing Company, the brewery introduced the acclaimed Saranac line of craft beers while continuing to brew Utica Club.

For breweriana collectors, Utica Club issues offer an engaging look into northeastern brewing heritage. Cans from this era are sought after by collectors who document manufacturing variations across aluminum tab tops, where subtle differences in chime contours, seam styles, and mandatory text chart the modernization of American beer canning.
