Utica Club Pilsener Lager Beer 12 Oz Zip/Tab Top Can

Utica Club Pilsener Lager History

Produced by the West End Brewing Company (later widely known as the F.X. Matt Brewing Company) in Utica, New York, the Utica Club Pilsener Lager 12 oz zip/tab top can represents a classic piece of mid-century East Coast brewing heritage. West End holds a celebrated distinction in American brewing lore as the very first brewery in the nation to be issued a federal license and sell beer immediately upon the repeal of Prohibition in 1933.

Utica Club achieved widespread recognition during the era in which this can was produced, largely propelled by iconic television advertising campaigns featuring the beloved talking beer steins, Schultz and Dooley, voiced by comedian Jonathan Winters. The popularity of these animated character commercials elevated Utica Club far beyond its regional Upstate New York roots, cementing the brand into mid-century pop culture.

For breweriana enthusiasts, this can showcases the brand's traditional heraldic graphics, featuring crisp typography, ornate flourishes, and the prominent "Utica Club" signature script. Several variations exist among collector circles, showcasing slight shifts in mandatory text placement, differing seam constructions such as MiraSeam and soldered bodies, and subtle contrasts in metallic and background finishes. The can stands as a staple representation of West End's packaging transition during the self-opening can revolution.
