Valley Forge Beer 12 Oz Zip Top Can

Norristown's Valley Forge Zip Top

Originating in Norristown, Pennsylvania, Valley Forge Beer carries a storied place in Mid-Atlantic brewing history. The flagship label was first introduced in 1912 by the Adam Scheidt Brewing Company, which operated along Stony Creek and grew into one of the region's largest independent breweries. The brand's adoption of the historic "Valley Forge" moniker famously sparked controversy upon its debut, drawing formal protests from the local Valley Forge Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, who objected to using the revered Revolutionary War encampment name to market a commercial beverage. Despite the initial pushback, the label flourished and became an enduring regional favorite.

The brewery later adopted the Valley Forge Brewing Company corporate name before the operation became part of Philadelphia's C. Schmidt & Sons brewing network. During the industry's mid-century packaging shift, the Norristown facility rolled out this 12-ounce zip top format, updating the time-tested brand to reflect modern self-opening convenience.

For breweriana collectors, this can represents an important transitional chapter in Pennsylvania canning history. The design highlights the prominent Valley Forge lettering alongside classic patriotic motifs tied to the brewery's heritage. Variations exist among surviving examples, displaying subtle differences in brewery corporate credit lines, can maker markings, and state tax lid stampings.
