Valley Forge Old Tavern Beer Flat Top Can

Valley Forge Old Tavern Flat Top

The Valley Forge Old Tavern Beer Flat Top Can represents a notable chapter in Pennsylvania brewing history, tying together two regional powerhouses: the historic Adam Scheidt Brewing Company and C. Schmidt & Sons.

Brewery Heritage

The Valley Forge brand originated with the Adam Scheidt Brewing Company, established in Norristown, Pennsylvania, along Stony Creek. Scheidt built a strong regional following throughout the mid-Atlantic with its flagship Valley Forge line. In 1954, Philadelphia brewing powerhouse C. Schmidt & Sons acquired the Scheidt operation. Rather than shuttering the Norristown facility, Schmidt continued to brew and package beer at the location, maintaining beloved regional brand names like Valley Forge while modernizing plant operations.

Label and Graphic Design

The Valley Forge Old Tavern design incorporates traditional tavern-inspired aesthetics, bold period lettering, and heraldic accents that pay homage to the brand's colonial Pennsylvania namesake. The lithographed label prominently displays the Norristown mandatory line under C. Schmidt & Sons, marking the can as a key piece of the plant's post-acquisition operational period.

Collector Notes

Within the breweriana community, this flat top is a valued artifact documenting the era of mid-century brewing consolidation in the Mid-Atlantic. Several variations exist among surviving examples, displaying differences in canning company manufacturer marks, bottom lid stamps, and subtle shifts in mandatory legal text placement. The Norristown brewery continued producing Schmidt-owned labels until the facility permanently closed its doors in 1974, making cans from this location lasting mementos of Norristown's brewing history.
