Volks Brau Pale Dry Beer Flat Top Can

Volks Brau Pale Dry Flat Top

The Volks Brau Pale Dry Beer flat top is a mid-century can produced by Drewrys Ltd., U.S.A. Inc. in South Bend, Indiana. Manufactured as a standard 12-ounce steel container, the can is distinguished by its Bavarian-inspired illustrative motif. The front graphic is dominated by a large, ornate blue lidded stein centered against red and blue horizontal banners. Flanking the stein are illustrated men dressed in traditional German lederhosen and feathered alpine hats raising mugs in a celebratory toast, while the bottom section identifies the brew as "Eastern Premium Beer" and a "Product of U.S.A."

Drewrys introduced the Volks Brau brand in the mid-1950s as part of an effort to capitalize on the popularity of European-style lagers. With a name translating to "people's brew," the label was marketed as a crisp, pale dry option tailored to post-war American consumer preferences for lighter lager profiles. The brand remained in production into the early 1960s before Drewrys simplified its portfolio and phased out secondary regional labels in favor of its primary flagship lines.

Drewrys Ltd., U.S.A. originated from the Drewry family's Canadian brewing enterprises, which had operated in Manitoba since the late nineteenth century. Following the repeal of Prohibition, the company established an American presence by purchasing South Bend's former Muessel Brewing Company complex in 1936. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, the South Bend operation expanded rapidly, becoming a major regional power in the Midwest beer market. The company merged with the Associated Brewing Company in 1963, and the South Bend plant was later acquired by the G. Heileman Brewing Company in 1972 before being permanently closed later that year.

Among breweriana collectors, mid-century flat tops from Drewrys are appreciated for their colorful design aesthetic and historical connection to Indiana's industrial brewing past. Volks Brau stands out within this category as an engaging example of mid-century packaging that blended German folklore motifs with American canned beer culture.
