Wacker Premium Beer Crowntainer

Wacker Premium Beer Crowntainer

The Wacker Premium Beer Crowntainer stands as a classic artifact of Pennsylvania brewing history, originating from the historic Wacker Brewing Company in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Lancaster once earned renown as the "Munich of the United States" due to its dense population of German immigrants and rich brewing tradition, with Wacker serving as one of the city's foremost regional producers.

Graphic Design and Heritage

The can showcases a bold red eagle emblem positioned centrally on the face, accompanied by "Wacker" rendered in blue and white lettering directly above "Premium Beer". This eagle motif pays homage to the brewery's origins: the site originally operated as the Eagle Brewery before being acquired by Joseph Wacker in 1870. The iconic eagle insignia remained a defining visual hallmark of the brewery's branding until the historic plant ceased operations in 1956.

Manufacturing and Variations

Produced by the Crown Can Company using their two-piece drawn steel construction, the Wacker Premium Crowntainer features an off-white base coat and sharp lithography. Variations exist across different manufacturing runs, with notable differences including the presence or absence of the mandatory "Internal Revenue Tax Paid" (IRTP) statement, as well as minor typographic adjustments on the mandatory side panels.

Collector Significance

Among breweriana collectors specializing in Pennsylvania labels and cone-top era packaging, Wacker cans remain highly desirable. Alongside the brewery's well-known "Little Dutch" brand, the Wacker Premium Crowntainer represents an iconic mid-century artifact from an independent regional brewer that helped define Lancaster County's brewing legacy.
