Wagner's Gambrinus Pale Beer Cone Top Can

Wagner's Gambrinus Pale Cone Top

The Wagner's Gambrinus Pale Beer cone top was produced by August Wagner Breweries, Inc., located along South Front and College Streets in Columbus, Ohio. Founded in 1906 by German immigrant August Wagner as the Gambrinus Brewing and Bottling Company, the brewery built its regional identity around its namesake, King Gambrinus—the folkloric patron icon of beer.

This high-profile can showcases ornate graphic design centered on the illustration of King Gambrinus holding a raised glass, framed by rich metallic detailing and distinct typography branding the brew as "Gambrinus Pale Beer". Manufactured by the Continental Can Company, the can was part of a major era of regional packaging for the Columbus brewer.

Collectors recognize several variations across the production run of this label. Documented differences include versions manufactured with and without Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) mandatory phrasing, slight variations in the side panel text, and graphic iterations that alter the central rendering of King Gambrinus. The brand also holds a notable place in pop culture memorabilia, as August Wagner’s Gambrinus products were famously featured in mid-century promotional materials featuring comedy legend Jonathan Winters.

Today, this can is a celebrated centerpiece among collectors specializing in Ohio breweriana and regional beer history.
