Waldorf Red Band Super Beer Flat Top Can

Waldorf Red Band Can History

Produced by the Forest City Brewery, Inc. in Cleveland, Ohio, the Waldorf Red Band flat top can is a notable piece of Ohio brewing history. Established in the Slavic Village neighborhood along Union Avenue by Bohemian entrepreneurs Michael Albl, Joseph Troyan, and Vaclav Humel, the brewery catered heavily to Cleveland's vibrant immigrant communities.

The brand name "Waldorf" was chosen as a direct linguistic play on the brewery's own moniker, combining the German words Wald (forest) and Dorf (village or town). Under this banner, Forest City offered several flagship labels, with the Red Band designation identifying this distinct pilsner.

Manufactured with the help of the American Can Company, this container features bold red, white, and metallic lithography. The side panels incorporate opening instruction diagrams, reflecting early industrial canning practices. Due to regional regulations during its era of distribution across northern Ohio and western New York, cans were often stamped with Ohio tax lids.

For breweriana enthusiasts, the can serves as a tangible connection to Cleveland's post-Prohibition brewing landscape. Multiple variations exist across its production lifespan, distinguished by subtle differences in side-panel text layout, patent markings, and canning codes. Production ceased when Forest City ended independent operations in the 1940s, marking the conclusion of authentic Waldorf cans.
