Walter's Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Eau Claire's Walter's Beer Can

The Walter's Beer 12 oz tab top can stands as a prominent piece of midwestern brewing heritage, representing the Walter Brewing Company of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Renowned for its bold graphic presentation, the can prominently features the classic Walter's shield motif alongside the brewery's famous trademark slogan, "Beer That Is Beer".

The Walter Brewing Company established deep roots in Eau Claire during the late nineteenth century when Johannes Walter founded operations in the city. Following the repeal of Prohibition, members of the extended Walter family reorganized and revitalized the Eau Claire plant. Throughout the mid-twentieth century, the company flourished as a premier regional packaging brewery, distributing canned beer across Wisconsin and neighboring states.

For breweriana collectors, this tab top container illustrates a key chapter in metal packaging history. The steel can showcases clean commercial lithography emphasizing the Walter brand name and regional origin. Variations exist across production runs, featuring differences in side mandatory text, can company manufacturer logos, and specific tab styles such as early zip tabs and ring pulls.

Today, this can remains a staple of Wisconsin breweriana collections, commemorating one of Eau Claire's longest-running independent brewing establishments before the historic Elm Street brewery closed in the 1980s.
