Walter's Pilsener Beer Flat Top Can

Walter's Pilsener Beer Flat Top

Produced by Walter Brewing Company in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, this flat top can represents one of the Chippewa Valley's most recognizable mid-century regional brewing labels. The Walter family established a deep-rooted brewing heritage in Wisconsin during the late 19th century, with their Elm Street facility in Eau Claire serving as a major regional operation for decades.

The label art incorporates the company's well-known promotional tagline, "that is beer," set in cursive script directly below the bold blackletter "Walter's" brand name and Gothic-lettered "Beer." Resting at the top center is the brewery's coat-of-arms crest, depicting a crowned shield framing a heraldic rampant lion, accompanied by the arched declaration "SUPERIOR QUALITY." The bottom boundary of the central panel notes the volume statement, "CONTENTS 12 FLUID OUNCES."

Over the course of its production, variations of this flat top can emerged from different container manufacturing runs, exhibiting subtle distinctions in mandatory text, canning codes, and seam details. The can stands as a classic artifact of Wisconsin's independent brewing industry.
