Wiedemann Bohemian Special Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Wiedemann Bohemian Special Can

This Wiedemann Bohemian Special Beer can represents a significant chapter in Northern Kentucky brewing heritage, originating from the Geo. Wiedemann Brewing Company during its era as a division of the G. Heileman Brewing Company in Newport, Kentucky.

Historical Context

Founded in 1870 by German immigrant George Wiedemann, the Newport brewery expanded over the decades to become the largest brewing enterprise in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and a dominant force throughout the greater Cincinnati and Ohio River Valley markets. The Bohemian Special brand was the brewery's long-standing flagship product. In 1967, the historic Newport operation merged with G. Heileman Brewing Company. Heileman maintained production at the Columbia Street plant in Newport as a regional division until the facility permanently ceased brewing operations in 1983.

Can Design and Insignia

The label showcases Wiedemann's classic visual identity, centered on a bold red and white color scheme. The front panel highlights the traditional Wiedemann script beneath the "Bohemian Special" title. Accompanying the brand typography is the iconic Wiedemann heraldic emblem featuring an eagle positioned atop a stylized "W" crest. The mandatory side-panel text designates the canning authority to Geo. Wiedemann Brewing Co. as a division of G. Heileman Brewing Co., Inc., in Newport, Kentucky.

Collector Variations

Breweriana enthusiasts document multiple variations of this tab top release. Differences between production batches include subtle adjustments to the mandatory brewery location phrasing, slight layout modifications in the heraldic crest, and distinct manufacturer marks along the seam from various can fabricators.
