Wiedemann Bohemian Special Brew Fine Beer Flat Top Can

Wiedemann Bohemian Special Brew Can

The Geo. Wiedemann Brewing Company of Newport, Kentucky, established itself as a regional brewing powerhouse in the Greater Cincinnati metropolitan area following its founding in 1870. Bohemian Special Brew served as the company's flagship label, anchoring Wiedemann's distribution across the Ohio Valley and into surrounding states.

Design and Collector Significance

This container reflects an essential era of Northern Kentucky breweriana. Displaying the prominent "Wiedemann Fine Beer" and "Bohemian Special Brew" typography alongside the classic Geo. Wiedemann crest and shield motifs, the graphic design exemplifies mid-century commercial branding.

Collectors actively seek out this label due to known text and manufacturer variations that appeared during production. These include differences in canning company identification marks, state tax notices, and subtle adjustments to the mandatory brewery address line. Because Newport sits directly across the Ohio River from Cincinnati, cans distributed from the Newport plant represent a key piece of the competitive brewing landscape that pitted Wiedemann against local rivals like Burger and Hudepohl.

Historical Context

Following Prohibition, the Geo. Wiedemann Brewing Company grew to become one of Kentucky's largest independent breweries. The Newport facility remained in operation for over a century until corporate acquisitions reshaped regional brewing in the late 20th century. Today, authentic Newport-mandated Bohemian Special Brew cans remain cornerstone pieces for specialized Ohio Valley breweriana collections.
