Wieland's Extra Pale Beer Cone Top Can

San Jose's Wieland's Cone Top

Wieland's Extra Pale Lager represents a notable chapter in Northern California brewing history, produced by the Pacific Brewing & Malting Company in San Jose, California. Pacific Brewing & Malting revived the storied nineteenth-century John Wieland brand name and selected Wieland's Extra Pale as the inaugural brand for their venture into canning.

Manufactured by the Continental Can Company in a low-profile cone top format, the can features the classic Wieland's script against a crisp metallic background, complemented by the prominent promotional slogan, "Wieland's Has The Flavor!" As a container from this era, it carries the mandatory "Internal Revenue Tax Paid" (IRTP) statement alongside the San Jose brewery designation.

For breweriana collectors, this container holds significant interest due to Pacific Brewing & Malting's regional footprint and the wartime metal restrictions that halted standard commercial canning operations before the brewery shifted packaging formats in later decades. Variations exist across production runs, distinguished by slight changes in mandatory labeling text, side-panel layout, and subtle metallic color shifts.

The can remains an essential centerpiece for West Coast breweriana enthusiasts focusing on pre-war California regional breweries and the golden age of cone top manufacturing.
