Wilco Premium Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Wilco Premium Beer Golf Tab Top

The Wilco Premium Beer 12 oz straight steel tab top can is a vintage regional store-brand container distinguished by its prominent athletic illustration. The label design features an arched yellow "WILCO" brand name above a golf ball graphic overlaid with bold text. Dynamic motion lines trace the ball's trajectory away from an illustrated golfer finishing a swing on a fairway bordered by sand traps and a small gallery of onlookers. Running vertically along the side seam is the mandatory statement indicating that the brew was canned exclusively for Roger Wilco Liquor Stores by Colonial Brewing Company.

Wilco Premium was developed as an exclusive private label for Roger Wilco, a well-known discount liquor retailer in southern New Jersey. During the tab top era, large independent retailers frequently partnered with regional packaging facilities to produce proprietary house labels. These private brands allowed stores to offer economical alternatives to national brands while driving customer loyalty to their retail outlets. As wholesale distribution networks evolved and national brewing conglomerates increased their market dominance in subsequent decades, bespoke retail house labels of this kind gradually disappeared.

Production of the can is credited to the Colonial Brewing Company of Hammonton, New Jersey. Colonial operated as an alternate trade name for the Eastern Brewing Corporation. Eastern was originally established in 1933 as Eastern Beverage Corporation following the repeal of Prohibition and was reorganized a decade later. Based in Atlantic County, Eastern Brewing built a robust business as a prolific contract brewer, packaging countless proprietary labels and house brands for regional retail chains across the East Coast under various trade names until its eventual closure in 1990.

Among breweriana hobbyists, this can attracts attention across multiple collecting niches. In addition to being sought after by enthusiasts of New Jersey and Mid-Atlantic brewing history, the detailed golf motif makes it an appealing crossover piece for collectors dedicated specifically to sports-themed beer containers.
