Williams Purple Cow Beer Flat Top Can

Williams Purple Cow Flat Top Can

The Williams Purple Cow Beer Flat Top Can stands as one of the most celebrated and sought-after graphic beer cans in American breweriana. Produced by the historic Fitzgerald Bros. Brewing Company of Troy, New York, the can was commissioned in connection with Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts.

Background and College Connection

The label pays tribute to Williams College's mascot, the Purple Cow, a symbol originally popularized on campus through a student humor publication inspired by Gelett Burgess's famous nonsense poem. Produced as a special commemorative release for college gatherings and alumni reunions, the can was packaged in limited quantities rather than distributed broadly through standard retail channels.

Graphic Design and Collector Appeal

The can is renowned across the collecting community for its whimsical aesthetic. The front panel prominently features an illustrated purple cow caricature set against a vibrant background, accompanied by stylized typography announcing the Williams Purple Cow branding. Due to its restricted regional distribution and collegiate lore, the can holds prized status among breweriana enthusiasts and commands significant interest whenever specimens surface at specialized auctions.

Manufacturing and Variations

Fitzgerald Bros. Brewing Company partnered with container manufacturers of the era to produce the run. Across known collections, variations exist in manufacturer marks, canning codes, and slight mandatory statement placements. While later commemorative issues featuring the mascot were produced by other regional breweries, the flat top version bearing the Fitzgerald Bros. Troy, New York mandatory statement remains a premier centerpiece for collectors of New York breweriana and classic collegiate-themed cans.
