Yorktown Extra Fine Premium Beer Flat Top Can

Yorktown Extra Fine Flat Top Can

The Yorktown Extra Fine Premium Beer 12-ounce flat top can is a mid-twentieth-century offering produced by The Old Reading Brewery, Inc. of Reading, Pennsylvania. The design features a bold crest at the top enclosing a stylized silver "Y," flanked by cursive scroll flourishes and the declaration "Made in Pennsylvania." Prominently spanning the center is the "YORKTOWN" brand in tall, shadowed lettering, accented below by the lowercase "extra fine" descriptor and grounded by "PREMIUM BEER" across the lower red band.

Introduced in the mid-1950s, Yorktown was developed as part of Old Reading's lineup of regional brands. During an era when mid-century brewers looked to appeal to diverse consumer demographics, the Yorktown label gave the brewery a dependable, locally crafted lager. Its colonial-sounding name and traditional heraldic emblem aligned with advertising trends of the period that highlighted regional pride and classic brewing heritage.

The history of the brewery traces back to 1886, when it was established as the Reading Brewing Company at Ninth and Little Laurel Streets in Reading, Pennsylvania. The plant navigated National Prohibition by operating under the name Health Beverage Company to produce near beer and non-alcoholic beverages. Following the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, the business reorganized as The Old Reading Brewery, Inc. It experienced decades of success within the Mid-Atlantic market with products like Old Reading Beer and Reading Premium before escalating competition from national brewing conglomerates led to the plant's eventual closure in the 1970s.

For breweriana enthusiasts, this flat top can represents a classic piece of Pennsylvania brewing history. Collectors of Mid-Atlantic regional cans appreciate the striking graphics, the metallic silver elements, and the distinct design variations found across the brand's canning run.
