Kingsbury Zing Near Beer Can

The Zing Cereal Beverage can holds a notable place in mid-century breweriana as an offering from the Kingsbury brewing operation in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. While Kingsbury achieved widespread recognition for its traditional lagers and ales, the company developed a strong legacy in non-alcoholic malt formulations dating back to the Prohibition era. Rather than abandoning non-alcoholic cereal beverages after Prohibition's repeal, Kingsbury maintained production and introduced the Zing label as an alternative malt beverage option.

During the era of regional brewing consolidation—including Kingsbury's association and eventual division under the G. Heileman Brewing Company—beverage lines like Zing allowed the company to diversify its product portfolio beyond standard alcoholic beers. Cans bearing the Sheboygan mandatory text serve as physical artifacts tying directly to the brewery's long-standing footprint in eastern Wisconsin.

From a graphic standpoint, the Zing can is known for bold mid-century typography, clean geometric panels, and vibrant color blocking designed specifically for an alcohol-free malt beverage. Because near beers and non-alcoholic cereal beverages typically had significantly smaller production and canning runs compared to flagship regional lagers, these cans remain sought-after pieces among breweriana historians and collectors.

Variations of the can exist across different manufacturing runs. Collectors document differences in the mandatory brewery division statements along the seam, as well as minor shifts in typography and container manufacturer marks from the canning companies that supplied the brewery.
